Bon Secours Mercy Health. Anyone who has read the Scriptures knows that although Job had great faith in Jehovah God before his trials, he said that he had heard of Him by the hearing of the ear. This is because such people are upright, because they have faith, obedience, and fear toward God, and because they completely break with Satan.
They bring shame upon Satan, they make a coward of Satan, and they utterly defeat Satan. Their conviction in following God, and obedience to and fear of God defeat Satan, and make Satan completely give them up. If they wish to be saved, and wish to be completely gained by God, then all those who follow God must face temptations and attacks both great and small from Satan.
Those who emerge from these temptations and attacks and are able to fully defeat Satan are those who have been saved by God. Job was just such a man of freedom, and this is precisely the significance of why God had handed him over to Satan.
Through handing us over to Satan, through a means of trials, God allows us to have discernment and knowledge of the wickedness and ugliness of Satan. As such, we will be those who triumph over Satan, namely, those who escape from the influence of Satan. And Satan will be put to shame and defeated.
In this drama, angelic beings are delivering reports on their activities. Satan is among them. The Evil One has been roaming the earth, surveying his domain Job ; 1 John ; Revelation God will soon allow Satan to afflict Job, but God is not punishing Job for sin.
He implies that Job has a selfish motive, a cynical reason for obeying and trusting God verses Satan insinuates that Job is simply out for what he can get from God. Job is only a fair-weather friend, Satan insists. Satan sneers at the good example. Satan tries to make a bet with God. Does Job love God only for selfish reasons?
Do we? He flings them at Job, and the world caves in on this innocent man. But Satan is proven wrong. After these terrible tragedies strike Job, he tears his robe and shaves his head. Time elapses. One day, another angelic report takes place in heaven. God reaffirms to Satan his contention that Job truly loves God and his ways Job God again expresses confidence in Job.
The devil immediately strikes poor Job with horrible sores over his entire body. The fall of the house of Job is complete. Job is now on trial. He must answer a vital question. How will he, who had faithfully trusted God for help and protection, react to suffering that seems senseless and unjust? Will righteous Job reject God, or maintain his faith? So far, Satan has lost every round. But can Job endure?
Will he continue to trust in God as the seemingly endless suffering rolls on, with only pain and death in sight? Will Job persevere even though God seems to have forsaken him? That is the issue at stake. Job can be seen as a metaphor of the suffering believer. The book asks us to consider our faith.
Scene 2 of this great drama takes place on an ash heap in the land of Uz, here on earth Job Job is suffering pain and anxiety. He is emotionally alone, tormented, confused, angry.
His three friends who came to comfort him are instead emotionally and verbally persecuting him. They have no understanding of what God is trying to accomplish nor why Job is suffering so terribly. Make sure you have a workspace ready for them as well to help ease them in.
