I've had the issue several times before on cumulative updates but have previously managed to get by using one of the fudges above. However, this essential security update has my laptop stuck in an endless loop of downloading, installing, rebooting, failing, rolling back, downloading, installing, I am in the same boat.
A have a Dell laptop, i7, touchscreen. I have tried for nearly 9 months to get past this. I have turned AV on and off, flushed cache, deleted download locations.
I am running Kaspersky AV how about you? Did you ever get past this? The only other thing I haven't tried is a full uninstall of AV and will try that shortly. Build 20H2 installed without issue. Re-installed the audio driver and now I'm dealing with the infamous "popping" sound when pushing audio through the onboard speakers.
Fix one thing and destroy another. Run Troubleshoter and check what message it is producing. For my case it was showing that there was some issue in Java Runtime, I uninstalled Java and issue solved. It appears if you use Macrium Reflect software this may help you but I could not confirm that the problem was caused by Macrium. So whether you use Macrium or not see if this helps you. In reviewing this post with Ed, he told me that the most common cause of those "Update failed" messages is that there are two updates waiting. If one is a servicing stack update, it has to install first, and the machine has to restart before it can install the next update. Problem solved. Even though it talks about some Windows 7 update issues, the underlying principle is the same. Microsoft actually ships Windows 10 with a Windows Update troubleshooting tool. I find the easiest way to reach it is simply type "troubleshoot" in the search box. Because I'm working on an older revision of Windows 10, the screen above is shown. This will bring up the full Troubleshooting panel. You'll want to select "Fix problems with Windows Update. I didn't feel I needed to use Advanced options, so I just hit Next.

The fastest way to fix Updates is to upgrade manually to the latest version which will reinstall WIndows while saving apps, files and most settings in place, takes about an hour and repairs most problems.
I'll give you everything else possible for fixing failed Windows Updates, so that at least something will work. Even if you've tried a step, please do it over in sequence.
Report back any steps that cannot be performed and why: Some Updates will sort themselves out in a few days so I'd wait to see.
This folder has all the files related to Windows updates. Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly. This saves your files, apps and most settings in place, is the most stable method to change versions, brings your Updates current, resolves most problems.
